Fixed memory leak in tests
...
The AssertNumQueriesContext didn't reset connection's use_debug_cursor
in case there was an exception. This resulted in leaking query strings
into connection.queries. Maximum memory use pre-patch was around 700MB,
post-patch it is around 200MB for Django's test suite.

Abused atomic for transaction handling in TestCase.

It isn't necessary to disable set_autocommit since its use is prohibited
inside an atomic block. It's still necessary to disable the legacy
transaction management methods for backwards compatibility, until
they're removed.

Made transaction.managed a no-op and deprecated it.

enter_transaction_management() was nearly always followed by managed().
In three places it wasn't, but they will all be refactored eventually.
The "forced" keyword argument avoids introducing behavior changes until
then.
This is mostly backwards-compatible, except, of course, for managed
itself. There's a minor difference in _enter_transaction_management:
the top self.transaction_state now contains the new 'managed' state
rather than the previous one. Django doesn't access
self.transaction_state in _enter_transaction_management.

* Renamed smart_str to smart_bytes.
* Re-introduced smart_str as an alias for smart_text under Python 3

Thus smart_str always returns a str objects.
* Used the new smart_str in a few places where both Python 2 and 3
want a str.

Fixed #18271 -- Changed stage at which TransactionTestCase flushes DB tables.

Previously, the flush was done before the test case execution and now
it is performed after it.
Other changes to the testing infrastructure include:
* TransactionTestCase now doesn't reset autoincrement sequences either
(previous behavior can achieved by using `reset_sequences`.)
With this, no implicit such reset is performed by any of the provided
TestCase classes.
* New ordering of test cases: All unittest tes cases are run first and
doctests are run at the end.
THse changes could be backward-incompatible with test cases that relied
on some kind of state being preserved between tests. Please read the
relevant sections of the release notes and testing documentation for
further details.

Skip model validation when models are known good.

In some situations Django calls model validation when the models are
already known good. This is most visible in tests, which use flush
and loaddata commands. This resulted in around 10% overhead when
running tests under sqlite.

Refs #14799 . Technically this fixes the problem, but I'm far from convinced
it's the perfect solution, so I'm leaving the ticket open. I'm committing
this now because it's the minimum required to get the test suite running
again, but this commit can -- and probably should -- be reverted in favor of
a more holistic fix later on.

Modified the way EMAIL_BACKEND is specified to make it consistent with the new "use the class name" policy for backends.

This is a BACKWARDS-INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE for anyone using a manually
specified EMAIL_BACKEND setting. If you have manually specified
EMAIL_BACKEND, you will need to append ".EmailBackend" to your

Fixed #9977 - CsrfMiddleware gets template tag added, session dependency removed, and turned on by default.

This is a large change to CSRF protection for Django. It includes:
* removing the dependency on the session framework.
* deprecating CsrfResponseMiddleware, and replacing with a core template tag.
* turning on CSRF protection by default by adding CsrfViewMiddleware to
the default value of MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES.
* protecting all contrib apps (whatever is in settings.py)
using a decorator.
For existing users of the CSRF functionality, it should be a seamless update,
but please note that it includes DEPRECATION of features in Django 1.1,
and there are upgrade steps which are detailed in the docs.
Many thanks to 'Glenn' and 'bthomas', who did a lot of the thinking and work
on the patch, and to lots of other people including Simon Willison and
Russell Keith-Magee who refined the ideas.

Fixed #8138 -- Changed django.test.TestCase to rollback tests (when the database supports it) instead of flushing and reloading the database. This can substantially reduce the time it takes to run large test suites.

This change may be slightly backwards incompatible, if existing tests need to test transactional behavior, or if they rely on invalid assumptions or a specific test case ordering. For the first case, django.test.TransactionTestCase should be used. TransactionTestCase is also a quick fix to get around test case errors revealed by the new rollback approach, but a better long-term fix is to correct the test case. See the testing doc for full details.

Major refactoring of django.dispatch with an eye towards speed. The net result is that signals are up to 90% faster.

Though some attempts and backwards-compatibility were made, speed trumped compatibility. Thus, as usual, check BackwardsIncompatibleChanges for the complete list of backwards-incompatible changes.
Thanks to Jeremy Dunck and Keith Busell for the bulk of the work; some ideas from Brian Herring's previous work (refs #4561 ) were incorporated.
Documentation is, sigh, still forthcoming.

Changed/fixed the way Django handles SCRIPT_NAME and PATH_INFO (or

equivalents). Basically, URL resolving will only use the PATH_INFO and the
SCRIPT_NAME will be prepended by reverse() automatically. Allows for more
portable development and installation. Also exposes SCRIPT_NAME in the
HttpRequest instance.
There are a number of cases where things don't work completely transparently,
so mod_python and fastcgi users should read the relevant docs.

Fixed #7441 - Improved the doctest OutputChecker to be more lenient with JSON an XML outputs. This is required so that output ordering that doesn't matter at a semantic level (such as the order of keys in a JSON dictionary, or attributes in an XML element) isn't caught as a test failure. Fixed #5898 -- Changed a few response processing paths to make things harder to get wrong and easier to get right. Previous behaviour wasn't buggy, but it was harder to use than necessary.

We now have automatic HEAD processing always (previously required ConditionalGetMiddleware), middleware benefits from the Location header rewrite, so they can use relative URLs as well, and responses with response codes 1xx, 204 or 304 will always have their content removed, in accordance with the HTTP spec (so it's much harder to indavertently deliver invalid responses).
Based on a patch and diagnosis from regexbot@gmail.com .

Fixed #2066 : session data can now be stored in the cache or on the filesystem. This should be fully backwards-compatible (the database cache store is still the default). A big thanks to John D'Agostino for the bulk of this code.
