This monster of a patch is the result of Alex Gaynor's 2009 Google Summer of Code project.
Congratulations to Alex for a job well done.
Big thanks also go to:
* Justin Bronn for keeping GIS in line with the changes,
* Karen Tracey and Jani Tiainen for their help testing Oracle support
* Brett Hoerner, Jon Loyens, and Craig Kimmerer for their feedback.
* Malcolm Treddinick for his guidance during the GSoC submission process.
* Simon Willison for driving the original design process
* Cal Henderson for complaining about ponies he wanted.
... and everyone else too numerous to mention that helped to bring this feature into fruition.

LazyObject called a public method ``get_all_members`` on wrapped objects in
order to allow introspection. This could easily cause name clashes with
existing methods on wrapped objects, and so has been changed to use the
standard methods. This could be slightly backwards-incompatible, in obscure
cases, if the undocumented LazyObject has been used externally.

This involved changing the way the internal function
decorator_from_middleware works slightly, breaking some code that relied on
the old behaviour. As a result, it is much simpler, but cache_page has been
made slightly more complex to cope with the change.

Some template filters and tags understood single-quoted arguments, others
didn't. This makes everything consistent. Based on a patch from akaihola.
Fixed#7295.

This provides support for views that can have their ETag and/or Last-modified
values computed much more quickly than the view itself. Supports all HTTP
verbs (not just GET).
Documentation and tests need a little more fleshing out (I'm not happy with the
documentation at the moment, since it's a bit backwards), but the functionality
is correct.

Previously on "things we changed in the recent past".... the database
connection setup was changed. People were happy. Except for those
running on Python 2.3.
We had completely broken Django on Python 2.3. Turns out, this is due to
a long-standing bug in the _threading_local module that interacts with
object creation in 2.3.
Interestingly, although the bug remains in Python 2.4 and 2.5, they
don't trip over it for reasons I don't entirely understand at the
moment.

In r9707 we added a preference to use Python's standard json module (Python 2.6
and beyond). However, there is also a third-party module called json that was
being picked up by accident if it was installed. It isn't API compatible, so
bad things happened. This change avoids that problem.
Patch from markmuetz.

Also changed importing logic to prefer a system-installed version of
simplejson (unless it's an earlier version that does not contian the C
speedups), then the json module from Python 2.6, then the version
shipped with Django.

We now raise UnicodeDecodeError for non-UTF-8 bytestrings (thanks to Daniel
Pope for diagnosing this was being swallowed by ValueError) and allow UTF-8
bytestrings as template directories.

pattern to a "." in the final output. This hides what is probably a bug in the
pattern (the user almost certainly should have written "\."), but it will avoid
a large number of "bug" reports about reverse().

This is fully backwards compatible, but it fixes a bunch of little bugs. Thanks
to SmileyChris and Ilya Semenov for some early patches in this area that were
incorporated into this change.
